I do not know when Gugs wrote the article that currently resides on the "Oregon" page on this website, but it contains many of the rants that Gugs has spouted over the years I have known him about tue Pac10 and its relation to the BCS. I would like to address some of the complete lies and delusions contained there.
1) Gugals spends a paragraph talking about how the Pac10 gets screwed every year because "7 of the 8 BCS computer rankings are largely driven by margin of victory." This statement in unequivacally wrong. 0 of 8 computer polls rely on margin of victory. The big change to the BCS this year was the removal of margin of victory from ALL of the computer polls. As a STUDENT of the game I would expect you to know about such things. Sorry professor but you are going to have to find something else to blame this year, like the PAC 10 cant play defense worth a damn! The only team in the PAC 10 who even attemps to play defense in USC and they cant even beat Kansas State on a down year. They will win the Pac10 with two losses to ranked opponents (K-State and Notre Dame) Lack of defense is why the Pac10 is not and can not be considered the best conference in the country.
2) Gugs also point to marin of victory as a deciding factor in othe coaches and AP polls. Why people do look at that as a judge of how a team is playing, it is not the only factor by far. OU wouldnt be #2 in the polls with close games against Bama, Mizzou, and Texas if this was true. Miami nearly lost to FSU but didnt drop, and Virginia Tech hasn't blown out a single opponent this year and they sit in the top 5.
3) Another counter-point I would like to make. Gugals has always talk about how in the Pac10 teams can come out of nowhere and win, while that never happens in the BIG 12, SEC, etc. To that I say what about Iowa State. Iowa State has been a doormat since beofre the Big 8 existed. NC State (currently
9-0)is another up-start, which according ot you never happens outside the Pac10. Last year Maryland took the country by storm, and a few year back it was Northwestern. Besides, the only reason Pac10 teams apprear out of nowhere is that there isnt anybody to play defense against them. Baylor could score 40 points in the Pac10, hell the Jordan/Kirk IM team could score 30.
4) Gugs spends the last paragraph ranting about potential versus accomplishment. Saying that FSU, for example, get differential treatment for its talent even though it loses close games, unlike washington. To this I point to Notre Dame. The Irish do not have top NFL talent. Name me 3 prospects not names Arnaz Battle on that team. They sit at #3 in the BCS on nothing but accomplishment.
5) The reason Washington wont be playing for a championship this year is that there are 8 unbeatens ahead of them, not because they deserve to be there. Had Oregon stayed unbeaten they would be at the top of the polls, but loe and behold they cant play defense just like every other team in teh Pac10.
6) If there is an East Coast Bias, then there is also a West Coast Bias. Are you going to tell me that California the entertainment capital of the world dosent have any votes in the AP poll? You are do blinded by your own West Coast Bias that you cant admit when a better team resides west of the rockies.
7) This ties to the point above, while not addressed specifically in Gugs article. It however stems from a million rant I ahve heard previously. Anthing East of the Rockies, is not on the East Coast. Texas is not East Coast. Oklahoma is not East Coast. East Coast is at its broadest, East of the Mississippi River. Learn to read a map Mr. "I have a BA in Geography"
In conclusion, I would like to address Gugals personally.
Gugs, you are one of my best friends and I praise the day you wandered into Tracy's room and asked if he had anymore hot freshman girls you could have. Dont take this personally, but you need to learn a little about football before you release anymore spluge like the article on the Oregon page.
Professor, you can kiss my ass on your way to the back on the classroom!
