How About Them Bears?
September 18th, 2002

Whew, what a hard week it was to pick the games this upcoming week. Last week was just another great weekend in college football, nothing even comes close to the sport. First, I'll recap last week and then end with this week's game to watch.

As much as I hate Notre Dame and, therefore, never, pick them to win, I was impressed of their game against Michigan. They wanted to win more than Michigan did, that is for sure. They don't have near the talent that Michigan did yet still found a way to win. California was the surprise of the week, after going 1-10 last year, they are off to a 3-0 start and have averaged 50 points a game. I guess the former Oregon defensive coach and now head coach of Cal, Jeff Tedford, sure can make a quick impact. It just goes to show you that the PAC TEN has a deep pool of teams that on any given year, can win the PAC TEN. Can a Baylor or a Vandy do that in their conferences, I will be able to fly when that happens. Ohio State won their game on the shoulders of their rising super-star Maurice Clarett. And now it appears that he did all this when he hurt his knee so bad in the first quarter, that he needed surgery on it afterwards, wow, he still had 230 yards rushing. Washington State is a better team than that, but they simply could not get their offense on the same page. Wisconsin escaped with what was the second best lucky team to win, over a few questionable calls to win over Northern Ill. But by far the lucky team of the week was Georgia, with their win over SC. If you get the lateral pass you win, if you fumble it you lose, and they fumbled it. Watch out for Oklahoma, I know they only played a school that is so bad they need their second team to scrimage to get their self estem back. But Oklahoma showed it can have an offense, they might get better by leaps and bounds this year. The game of the week had to go to the Iowa/Iowa State game. Not only is it played for the dignity of the state but also for the "something" hawk trophy. Iowa State was down 24-7 and came back to win 36-31. Finally, what can I say about USC, they are good, how about that. In fact, right now I have them winning the PAC TEN! Colorado is down this year I admit that, but to limit them to only 4 first downs is impressive. Also, I would once again like to point out the bias in the ESPN/USA poll. California, who dominated a 15th ranked team in their poll did not receive one vote. However, in the AP they not only got 260, but are now ranked. Hey ESPN/USA poll it's time you pulled your head out of the East coast polluted sand and stop taking those barbituates.

Top conference so far this year PAC TEN (22-4), second place BIG 12 (23-11) Worst conference so far this year SUN BELT (2-18) if they send a team to their bowl game with a winning record I'll eat a grasshopper.

Heisman winner this week: Mr. Clarett

OK now this week's games. Oh my this could be the week of the upsets. LA tech is a good team and might beat Penn State, but it is away for them. Arizona could beat Wisconsin, although just about any team has a chance against them, this game also is going to be interesting because both teams have referees on their side and now it is going to come down to whoever can pay them the most before the start of the game. Mofia bosses in Arizona had better get going if they want to win this game. Texas Tech could beat NC State, Florida over Tenn, Michigan State is a better team than what happened against Cal and they could easily beat Notre Dame, and Kansas State could beat USC because we have not seen Kansas State at all this year and they could turn out to be the best team in the BIG 12, who knows.

Game to watch this week USC/Kansas State, second place Florida/Tenn both team will have bad years this year (Florida already does), but the loser of this game will dump any national chamionship dreams.

I'm out
