Forest Lakes

This weekend while Colleen was off at Jeff’s football game in Kansas with Claire, I took the opportunity to go backpacking with some people from church. We left Boulder around 2:30pm and arrived up at near the top of Moffat Road where the Needles Eye Tunnel is around 4pm.

A quick (and I mean quick) hike down to Forest Lakes provided a great spot for an overnight camp. There was nobody around and the view was fantastic. It’s only half a mile in from the start, but it’s all downhill.

The next morning I woke up early to take some pictures and wonder up to the upper lake to see the view.

Since we parked one car at the top and one car down below at the East Entrance of the tunnel, we were hiking one-way downhill and make quick work of the 4 mile trip. One highlight of the trip was Fred printed off a Geocache in the area and we happened to find it during our hike. Cool!

It’s hard to think that something this nice exists only an hour and a half from Boulder, and yet it wasn’t hardly mentioned in any of my guidebooks except for a paragraph or two.

My only regret is since the hike is relatively easy I wish I would have brought more comforts, not to mention my fly rod!
